I could see this black creature being a useful meta call, perhaps to deal with a variety of token commanders, especially with some recursive elements to trigger it again and again
For counters, it doesn't matter what kind of counter it is, nor does it matter who put the counter on the creature

If Cactus Preserve becomes a creature but you haven't controlled it continuously since your most recent turn began, you won't be able to activate its mana ability or attack with it that turn
